Zola, later more famous as a naturalist novelist, began his career as an art critic.

Manet shows the 26-year-old Zola seated in a corner of an undefined interior space. Dark and filled with books and art, the writer appears deep in thought, looking away from a large illustrated book. But things are not what they appear. Look closer and you will notice that none of the art featured in this painting are actually paintings.

"What a splendid New Year's present," wrote Manet, thanking him. The following year he expressed his gratitude to the writer by painting this portrait and presenting it to him.

On the wall is a reproduction of Manet's Olympia, a painting which sparked a fierce scandal at the 1865 Salon but which Zola held to be Manet's best work. A French writer who was born in 1840 in Paris. He is often credited as a founder of the naturalism movement in literature. He was childhood friends with Paul Cézanne who later introduced him to Manet. Zola was unemployed and lived in poverty for two years of his adult life.
